Being a parent to a puppy is a big responsibility. Puppies have so much energy and aren’t quite sure how the world works yet, so it’s on you to get them adjusted for a happy and healthy life! If you’re a new puppy owner, it can be extremely overwhelming. We have some tips to help get you started with your training to promote good behavior and set your dog up for success!

Create a Puppy-Safe Space

Everybody needs their own space, including your puppy. Use either a crate or a baby gate in a specific room to give your puppy his own space. This space should include somewhere to sleep and plenty of toys to keep busy. Put the puppy in this space whenever you’re not able to monitor them closely, or if they’re in need of a time-out to cool down.

Create a Routine

Puppies thrive on routine. Try to get them used to what your typical day looks like. This includes things like when you get home from work, when you get up in the morning, what time they get fed, and what time you have playtime together. Setting this routine early on and sticking to it will help him adjust quicker.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a better training tool than disciplining negative behavior. Praise your dog with words of affirmation, petting, and playtime when they do something good. They’ll want to keep doing those good behaviors to see a positive reaction from you, which is a lot better than waiting for bad behaviors and having to discipline them.

Set Aside Plenty of Time

Puppies require a major time commitment, and it’s important to make sure you’re ready for this adjustment. Set aside plenty of time each day to interact with your puppy and keep them active to get out their extra energy. Pent-up energy will result in more negative behaviors.

Socialization is Key

Puppies love playing with other dogs, and it’s important to socialize them early on to develop good behaviors. An environment like a dog park can be dangerous if he has no previous socialization skills, but a group obedience class is a great option. Your dog will learn how to be more obedient while getting the chance to interact with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment.
