Congratulations! You’ve brought home your new puppy. There’s just one problem: They are so hyped up on loving life that you can’t keep up with them, nor control them.
At Canine College, we understand the problem of hyper dog breeds or dogs who just have too much energy. Good thing there are a few tips and tricks to calming down your pup — and calming your nerves in the process.
- Go for a walk. We’re not talking about a 10 minute walk around the block, but instead a lengthy, 2-3 mile walk. If you have a sport dog breed, Canine College can even teach you and your dog to go on long runs together without your dog stopping to sniff the flowers every minute.
- Enjoy some backyard time. Don’t have the right environment to take your dog on a long walk? No worries. As long as you have a yard, you can always toss a Frisbee, ball or other toy for 30 minutes in order to help your dog wind down after a day of being cooped up in the house while you were at work.
- Let them run loose at a dog park. Socialization for your new puppy is key to their development. At Canine College, we can’t stress it enough how important it is to get your puppy used to both people and other animals. Running around with other dogs will also leave yours exhausted and content at the end of the day.
- Book a rally & agility class. If you have a breed that’s known for being hyper active yet alert, then heading to a rally and agility class might be a good idea. Here your dog will learn commands while getting the exercise they need.
