In 1989, the American Kennel Club established the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program to promote responsible dog ownership. An hour-long 10-step test is conducted between the dog and its handler. What’s Included in This Test?
The Good Citizen test at Canine College includes the following ten steps.
Test 1: Greeting a Friendly Stranger
This test shows if a dog will allow a stranger to approach the handler naturally and not become ill-mannered.
Test 2: Politely Sitting While Being Pet
This illustrates that a dog will politely allow a stranger to pet them without its handler.
Test 3: Allows Basic Grooming
This test demonstrates whether or not a dog will allow a vet or friend to groom or examine the dog without any significant problems.
Test 4: Walking With a Loose Leash
This indicates that a dog is under control when going for a walk.
Test 5: Politely Moves Through a Crowd
This test demonstrates whether or not a dog can handle being in public places with moderate pedestrian traffic.
Test 6: Responds to These Commands: “Sit”, “Down,” and “Stay in Place”
This basic test demonstrates that a dog is properly trained and responds to a handler’s command to sit, lay down, and remain in place.
Test 7: Coming When Called
This is another simple test proving that a dog comes when the handler calls.
Test 8: Positive Reaction Around Other Dogs
This test is significant as it distinguishes how a dog behaves around other dogs.
Test 9: Appropriate Reactions to Distractions
Distractions are common. This test demonstrates a dog is confident and at ease when faced with one.
Test 10: Good Manners When Left With a Trusted Person
You will likely need to leave your dog with a trusted person sometimes. This test demonstrates a dog remains in good behavior when left with another person.
How Can Your Pup Qualify For This Test Today?
A leash is required for all tests. Treats and toys cannot be used to entice a dog to perform during the trial. The team will fail unless all items are completed to the desired level.
