Rally is the latest dog performance craze that’s swept through the nation and landed in Boston at Canine College! This is a new sport that integrates both agility aspects as well as obedience. The program is rewarding and energizing for both owner and dog.
What Happens at Rally?
During a rally performance, both dog and handler are expected to complete a course in front of a panel of judges. The judges will grade each pair based on how well the dog performs the specific trick. The owner and dog will move through the stations — of which there are 12-20 depending on number of entrants — at a normal pace.
Note that the scoring is much less intense than traditional dog performances. In fact, the owner is encouraged to praise, clap, and use hand signals to get their dog to perform the specified task. The owner cannot, however, make physical contact with their dog.
What’s the Goal of Rally?
What makes this new performance fad so unique is that the whole point is to show the judges how well-behaved and trained your dog is. Your dog may be able to perform well behind closed doors and in a comfortable setting, but how well can they handle tasks in front of strangers and other dogs? The main goal is perform well in public in a way that reflects rigorous and successful training.
